The Habitat for Humanity model first began in Americus, Georgia in 1976 through the innovative vision of Millard Fuller and wife, Linda. Today, Habitat affiliates in more than 200 countries continue to partner with low-income families of every race, religion, and background to build thousands of homes each year.
Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte began in 1983 through the committed service and vision of seven area churches. Observing a dire need for adequate, affordable housing for the area’s low-income families, the churches created a non-profit group. The group, modeled after Habitat for Humanity in Americus, was dedicated to building and financing homes that low-income residents could afford through zero-interest, no profit mortgages.
Since 1983, our affiliate has been enabling working-class families to help themselves become homeowners. To date, over 800 families have been able to realize their potential to break free from the cycle of poverty through Habitat Charlotte’s home ownership program.
As the 7th ranked Habitat affiliate in the U.S., Habitat Charlotte continues to stand at the forefront of national efforts to fight substandard housing. In 2006, Habitat Charlotte eclipsed the 1 million dollar tithe level, becoming the largest single affiliate supporter of Habitat’s International mission. Our affiliate continues to be regarded as an innovator in developing sustainable, affordable housing programs along with pioneering fundraising initiatives.
Habitat Charlotte has also been recognized for its responsibility in non-profit management by Charity Navigator, earning a 4-Star rating in 2006 & 2007. We also played host to the Jimmy Carter Work Project in 1987 and hosted Habitat for Humanity International’s 30th Anniversary Celebration in 2006.
Habitat Charlotte continues to rely on the overwhelming support of our more than 22,000 local volunteers and donors, who continue to embody Christ’s compassion in action. Habitat Charlotte’s constituents have helped us set the foundation for a sustainable ministry.
