CONSTRUCTION AND RAIN

Thank you for helping us to keep you safe!

  • Volunteers should report to the job site if it’s raining and the determination about whether to work will be made at the site.  If volunteers are not able to work, then we will make every effort to reassign them to a different task or site.   In addition to the difficulty in actually forecasting rain, in Charlotte, it often rains on one part of the city and not on the other and rain often seems to stop at around 8am.
  • Volunteers and staff will not install trusses, sheathing, tar paper or shingles if it is raining – at all.
  • Volunteers and staff can install siding in light rain and immediately following a rain storm as long as the level of scaffolding is not over one level.
  • If there is lightening or thunder then volunteers and staff should not work on the roof, scaffolding or ladders (outside).
  • Volunteers and staff can return to working on the roof (trusses, sheathing, tar paper, shingles) when surfaces are dry to the touch.  This may not be first thing in the morning.
  • If the ground is muddy volunteers must be asked to clean their shoes as much as possible of mud before using scaffolding, ladders, or climbing onto the roof.  When possible, other volunteers should be encouraged to fetch and carry for those who have cleaned their shoes and are working on elevated surfaces.
  • Volunteers and staff should take extra care while walking on muddy surfaces as they can be very slick.
