Habitat Charlotte's intern and co-op program

We are currently accepting applications for students wishing to participate in co-operative education and intern experiences.

What is a Co-op?
Cooperative education is a structured educational strategy integrating classroom studies and productive work experiences in a field related to a students academic or career goals.  Co-ops generally work with companies more than one semester and the positions increase in responsibility each semester.

What is an Internship?
Interns generally are one semester in length but have similar goals. Your College or University may utilize different definitions and terms. 

We also accept folks who are not currently enrolled in school for a time period of up to 6 months.

What would co-ops and interns do at Habitat Charlotte?
We offer two types of internships. 

  • Unpaid internships with a commitment of 10-20 hours per week.   These are available in family services, construction, accounting and development (fundraising and public relations.)  For more information on these please contact Beth Van Gorp at bvangorp@habitatcharlotte.org
  • We also offer full-time paid for co-ops and interns to help in construction.  See below for more information

Information on Habitat's Full-Time Construction Intern/Co-op Program

What are the requirements?
Click here for a position description.  12 week commitment minimum.  Low cost housing.  Small hourly wage.  Full-time construction interns and co-ops will be temporary employees and receive a basic wage and low cost housing.  Co-ops and interns will complement our AmeriCorps program and will share living space with them and have similar experiences.   Please see information on "Ask an AmeriCorps" and information about the AmeriCorps housing.

What are the requirements to apply?
The Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps program is open to all individuals who meet the following qualifications:

  • 18 years of age and older (to meet Habitat requirements)
  • U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or lawful permanent resident alien of the U.S.
  • Have the approval or your college or university to participate in an intern or co-op program (if applicable)

In addition to an interest in construction we are looking for folks who have a sincere desire to serve, some past history of participating in service, leadership ability or potential, good communication skills, ability and interest in working in a team situation.  Please make sure that your cover letter completely describes why you are interested in serving at Habitat.    We recommend that you highlight your skills in the above areas on your application or essay.
